Hello, friends, and welcome to another episode of let me adjust my ears. We are working really hard on some new things over here at the podcast. And because behind the scenes looks are some of my most favorite, we're gonna rewind and back up to episode number 13, 13, an inside look at club 33.

Michele:

And club 33 is a Disney bucket list item for me, one that I am still waiting to get my invitation to. But my friend, Katelyn Fox, who you've heard on the episode with her Run Disney, I don't wanna say escapades, her Run Disney Accolades, got to go and visit, and she shares all the tea about what it's like to visit Disney's VIP club. Without further ado, here's Katelyn.

Michele:

Hello, my friends. I am very excited for today's podcast because we have a guest who's gonna tell us all about what she did to accomplish something that I know is on everybody's Disney bingo card. It is certainly on my, like, Disney. What is it? Hashtag must do Disney. I'm actually looking for the word, Disney bucket list. It is on my Disney bucket list, and it is the one thing that I am just not sure I'm ever gonna be able to accomplish, and that is a trip to club 33. So with me, I have my friends and fellow Disney adults, also a no kids Disney adult, my favorite kind. Katelyn.

Michele:

So, Katelyn, say hi. Introduce yourself, and then I cannot wait to ask you all about your day.

Katelyn:

Yes. I am so excited. Thank you, Michele, for having me. I was just sharing. I've never been on a podcast before, so I'm very honored that this is my first and it's talking about my favorite thing in the world, which is Disney. Like Michele said, I am absolutely a Disney adult. I had club 33 on my Disney bucket list. It was the number one item, and I never thought I would be able to do it.

Katelyn:

And, we'll get into it, but an opportunity fell into my lap, and I'm very, very happy to say that I was able to cross it off. But with Disney, I'm an annual pass holder down in Walt Disney World. I've been an annual pass holder since 2013, 2014, I think. And I'm an avid run Disney lover. I am trying for a runDisney perfect season next year, so fingers crossed we will see. But if you haven't listened to Michele

Michele:

with the princess run.

Katelyn:

Yes. I was gonna say if you haven't listened to Michele's episode on Run Disney, definitely go do it because it was a it was a great episode.

Michele:

Thank you. You're welcome. Yeah. Tell me how you made this d 33 dream come true because I'm gonna basically copy everything that you say right now so that I can make this happen. But, no, seriously, I know it's it's hard and it's something that we we can't drop names, so I understand that. But but tell us how you sort of worked your magic.

Katelyn:

Yeah. So I think it all just started really that everybody that I work with knows that I am the biggest Disney fan in the world. They know, like, if they wanna talk about Disney, they can always come to me. And about, I wanna say, 6 months ago, I was sitting in a meeting on a Friday afternoon, and, a lady that I work with said, you know, hey, Katelyn. I I think I have something that you might be interested in. 1 of our partners that we work with has this membership to some sort of exclusive Disney club, like a 33 something. And inside, you are dying going, you're like,

Michele:

how do you not know what this is?

Katelyn:

To to be honest, and I'm very sorry to to my company, it was a Friday afternoon. I was, like, 3 o'clock. I was a little checked out, and she starts talking about this. And I said, wait. Wait. Wait. You're talking about Club 33. What what do I need to do? I will do just about anything to get myself into this club.

Katelyn:

So long story short, the company that I work for, one of our partners has a membership, and I was able to go through my company. And I can say without a shout of of a doubt, it is the coolest thing that I have ever gotten from corporate America. So, that that is how I that is how I finagled my way in. Just let everybody know that I was a huge Disney fan, am a huge Disney fan and the opportunity presented itself.

Michele:

Work those connections. So now everyone in our head is gonna start playing 6 degrees of separation. And one of the things that I have in my bio is that I am actually 6 degrees of separation from the Duchess of Sussex, really I'm 5 from her so that makes me 6 to like Kate Middleton and Prince Charles and and yet I still don't know any way that I could work this d 33 thing. So anyway, you get your invitation, you know what day you're going, and I know you did some prep with Once Upon a Wardrobe. You, like, prepped. You did your homework.

Katelyn:

Absolutely. So I was a little fanatical, and I tried to learn everything that I could possibly learn about Club 30 3. And part of that, you know, I knew that going in, you can't take videos inside of the club, but you can take as many photos as you want. And, you know, Michele, we're very similar in that we love a good photo op. We love, you know, a good photo for the brand. A brand. Yeah. Exactly.

Katelyn:

And so I was like, who is going to make sure that my outfit is on point for this experience. And, thus, I reached out to our friends, Ashley and Lauren, over at Once Upon A Wardrobe. What's I

Michele:

just have to say again that neither Katelyn or I got anything from them. If you book with them. We just truly love them and their product. So yeah.

Katelyn:

Yes. Michele, I think you were the person that actually introduced me Yeah. Mhmm. To you, Ashley and Lauren. And I've used them so much. And, you know, this outfit just I wanted to look like a princess. And I had this image in my head that I wanted I had a specific pair of shoes that I wanted to wear. I actually didn't end up wearing them.

Katelyn:

I found a better pair of shoes to wear, but I wanted I have they were, like, clear heels, clear shoes. I wanted that Cinderella moment, but they are just phenomenal. So they put together my whole look and, you know, the the hard thing is I I did have a facility tour, for my job before going to Club 33. So I also needed to know, whatever I was wearing to the facility tour was also what I was wearing to Club 33 because we had a lunch reservation, and the the timing was just we were going right from one to the other. So luckily, I love the dress that that I was able to to find with Lauren and Ashley and I truly felt like a princess all day And, you know, I was just ready going in, having my packing list and ready to go, all the the knowledge that I had up in my head. So it was great.

Michele:

So now which one did you visit? Because and this is where you may know more than I because in order to not have my Disney dreams and hopes crushed, I actually don't know as much about Club 33 as probably some other Disney adults. So there is one in every single Disney park. Right? Like, there's not one for Disneyland in California and one at Disney World. There's one at Magic Kingdom, Epcot animal. Right? There's one and you're nodding yes, but

Katelyn:

Yeah.

Michele:

There's one in every box.

Katelyn:

Absolutely. Yeah. If I mean, I wish I I could be a member of it, but I am not. So all of the information that I know is what I was either told at the club or what I was able to figure out based off of doing extensive research for 6 months leading up to the trip. But you are correct. So there's one club in every park. So I went to the one in Disneyland, which is the original Yeah.

Michele:

OG. Oh my god. And get any better than that. It just really does it.

Katelyn:

I know. I still can't believe that it happened and that we're having this conversation. But so there's 2 different experiences that you can have in the Disneyland Club. So if the next time you guys are in Disneyland, if you walk back to New Orleans Square, it's right next to where the Blue Bayou restaurant is, kind of by the queue for Pirates of the Caribbean. Mhmm. You will see a little door that has a doorbell and it has the 33 logo on it and that is the entrance to the club. And once you're inside, you can either go to the Salon Nouveau, which is the members only lounge and bar, or you can go to the Grand Saloon, which is just the regular I say regular regular, air quotes, dining room. So there's 2 different areas that you can go once you're inside the club.

Michele:

Okay. So tell us everything. Start at the beginning. Give us the whole rundown. Like, I mean, I want to know everything.

Katelyn:

Absolutely. So I told Michele I'm a I'm a little bit of a nerd, a little planner, so I have notes here so that I don't forget anything because it was just, you know, it was just sensory overload for sure, but I was so excited. Like I said, the entrance is in New Orleans Square. And once you're inside the club, you can oh, you overlook the queue for pirates, like I mentioned.

Michele:

Okay. So next time we're all at Disneyland in the pirates queue, we're all gonna be looking to wave to people. Right?

Katelyn:

Is that Yeah.

Michele:

Hi. Can I come up there?

Katelyn:

Yeah. I, you know, I went out on the balcony to overlook the park and you can just see, like, it's, it's truly separating yourself from the chaos. And when you're in the club, you can't hear anything going on in the park even though you are right above where, you know, quote, unquote, the magic happens. You don't hear anything when you're inside, which we all commented. It was it was crazy. So, you walk up and and you ring the doorbell, and that's where I cried for the first time because, again, I never thought I would ring the doorbell and actually be admitted to the club.

Michele:

Seriously, I'm, like, gonna go ring that doorbell. Ring it. Let me in.

Katelyn:

Yeah. I rang the doorbell, gave my name, and then they bring you in, and you are led right into the Court of Angels. And the maitre d' is there, and and she explains the rules of the club. You know, no videography, no photography, or anything in the restrooms, but you can take as many photos as you want. And the Court of Angels has a little bit of history. So Court of Angels used to actually be a part of Disneyland Park. And when the club was remodeled, I think in 2013, 2014 time frame, they closed the court off to the general public, and they made that the entrance courtyard to club 33.

Michele:

So are you in air conditioning yet? Or No. Okay. That so this is kind of, like, outside, but not Yeah. But still behind a barrier.

Katelyn:

Exactly. Okay. Yep. You go through the door, then you're in a courtyard.

Michele:

Got

Katelyn:

it. And then you have the option. You can either go up the steps to get into the club, or you can take the elevator. And what we wanted to do is we took the stairs up, and then we took the elevator down because it's a glass elevator. So we wanted to take that, but we also wanted to take the stairs. Of course. That's exactly what I would do. Experience it all.

Katelyn:

Yeah. So you're led upstairs, and that is where you see the famous mosaic 33 tile that if you know someone that's been to club 33, if you've been to club 33 yourself, you know that people will take a photo of their shoes standing on that club 33 tile. And the concierge, she encouraged us to take our feet selfies, her words, not mine, feet selfies with the mosaic tile at some point during our visit. So, of course, I had to take a lot of those pictures.

Michele:

Which Katelyn has agreed we can share the week this episode airs. So those will be available on, Instagram, either me or Katelyn, but we will put that in the show notes for you for sure.

Katelyn:

Absolutely. So then once you get inside the club, the first thing you're greeted with is the merchandise, which is what that is what I was most looking forward to. I have wanted to shop the club 33 merchandise forever. Can't believe I did not give you an order. Like, I

Michele:

I totally missed that opportunity.

Katelyn:

Well, we we we can chat, Michele. I might be able to to hook you up with something. But, some of the merch is exclusive to members only, but the majority of it, like, all of the Rebecca Hook jewelry, all, like, the ears that they had when I was there, the spirit jerseys, all of that was open to to anybody visiting. And they just ask that you wait until the end of your visit to buy, like, to buy your merch. What we did is we took pictures of everything, and then we could think about it while we were dining. And that way, when we were ready, you know, to leave, we could just kind of place our order and get everything bagged and and ready to go. So the merch is the first thing that you see. And right next to the merch is Alfred.

Katelyn:

So this is another kind of war of club 33 is the club's mascot, and it is his name is Alfred, and he is an animatronic vulture that sits on top of the grandfather clock in the lobby of the club. And he is programmed for I think they said, like, 80 different things he can say. I could be wrong on that number, but it's all random. When he talks, he is not, like, on a set schedule. So, they said that you like, people go to the club, and they don't hear Alfred talk at all. And then other times, he's like a little chatterbox. And when we were there, luckily, he was a chatterbox, and we heard him say a bunch of different things. I honestly don't remember off the top of my head what he said.

Katelyn:

I was just so excited to to be there and taking it all in. Oh, how's it going? Yeah. Okay. So then the first thing that you can like, the first option that you have is to go to the Salon Nouveau. And, again, that's the members only lounge. Since I was with a member, I was able to go back and at least take a look even though we weren't dining there, and it's really cool. It's all wooden. It's a bunch of different, like, banquettes, and each banquette has a different theme.

Katelyn:

So there's, like, a haunted mansion theme. There's I I think there was, like, a little mermaid theme. So each banquette has a different theme, which was really cool. And it's all, like, New Orleans jazz kind of underground feel.

Michele:

Mhmm.

Katelyn:

And it was really cool. Again, I didn't spend a ton of time there. I just peeked my head in. I took a picture, and then I left. And then you are led down the hallway to the main dining area. But along the way, you do pass a harpsichord, and that harpsichord was rumored to be built specifically for Lillian Disney. And it's also rumored that sirs Elton John and Paul McCartney played the harpsichord when they were guests at the club. So I think that was the other really cool thing about being at the club.

Katelyn:

The cast members were so open to sharing stories and the history of the club, and, you know, they have this little vanity that was a prop in Mary Poppins, and they have the original rendering watercolor of the castle hanging on the wall. So all of that history, you're just surrounded by it, and the cast members are so willing to to tell stories and, you know, share things, obviously, within reason. They're not gonna talk about their celebrity guests or anything like that.

Michele:

Were there any celebrities there when you were there? There were not. Oh.

Katelyn:

At least not anybody that I knew. But I

Michele:

mean, in my mind, every member there is, like, a celebrity. So but

Katelyn:

I mean, I'm a celebrity. So

Michele:

Right. There

Katelyn:

was basically a celebrity. But they did tell us that there's actually an underground entrance to the club. So, like, dignitaries, celebrities, they just come in, they park their car, and there's an elevator that goes right from that parking deck straight up to the club straight back down so they can come in and out and you have no idea that they were there.

Michele:

That is the Disney life that I am meant to lead. Like, where do I get this parking thing? Right. Okay. And for everyone listening, like, you can anyone can apply to become a member of Disney 33, d 33. It is in essence like a country club membership and that your 1st year you pay initiation dues and then there are yearly dues after. And then anytime you use the club, you then pay for merchandise, food, and beverages on top of that. But that being said, there is a both a wait list and there is a membership committee that must approve all members. So people like me who are clearly starstruck and are gonna fawn over anybody who goes in there, I'm never gonna be able to get in because they do not want your typical fangirl who is going to make people feel uncomfortable with the ultimate, like, glazed eyelids when the celebrity would walk through the door, which I am certain would be me.

Michele:

I just can't imagine that I wouldn't, like, just be in my I just anyway, go on. See, I'm fangirling out right now. I I don't even know how to speak. Okay. So we've got you going into the main dining room.

Katelyn:

Yes. So then you are given your menu and you have a charger plate that has the 33 logo on it and inside the menu they give you just like a history of the club. It actually celebrated its 55th anniversary last year, so it was their emerald anniversary and the way that Club 33 got their name there's a lot of theories out there. I've read them all, but according to the menu, the reason that it seemed Club 33 is because of the address. So it is 33 Royal Street, and so that that's how the club got its name. Okay. Yeah. So like I said, I was there for lunch, and it is a 4 course lunch.

Katelyn:

And

Michele:

So does it start at a specific time or, like, do they take a reservate well, like, not walk in drop in reservations, but, like, lunches at noon for all 40 people who are gonna be in the dining room, or did your group get a 1 o'clock lunch time? And somebody else might start at 2.

Katelyn:

So it's staggered reservation. Okay. Our reservation was at 11:30.

Michele:

Okay.

Katelyn:

And I believe we were the if not the first, we were within the first three tables sat that day. They might start lunch at 11. I don't know what time dinner starts, but to even get the reservation, we had to give, like, 3 or 4 different dates that our party was available, And then the reservation people at Club 33, they get back to you, and they say, we have this day and this time available. And you kind of just take what you can get.

Michele:

You say, yes. I will be there.

Katelyn:

Exactly. And

Michele:

then and then you call Ashley and Lauren on the back phone, and then you call Katelyn and say, tell me where to do my research. So I got it. Okay. And so it's a 4 course meal.

Katelyn:

Yes. And it is a rotating menu. So from what I understand, the majority of the menu does stay the same, but some things, you know, come on the menu, leave the menu throughout the year. But what I had was for my appetizer, I had the braised beef hand pie, which was kinda like an empanada. It was very good, and I will preface this. I asked our, the cast member who was waiting on us. I asked him for his preferences, you know, what his favorite thing was, and I think I ordered all of his favorites because why wouldn't I do that?

Michele:

Right. Right.

Katelyn:

The second course was soup or salad, and this was the biggest decision for me because I am a Caesar salad girly, and it was either a Caesar salad or a tomato soup. And I went with the soup. So it was the sungold tomato soup with curry chicken, lemongrass, and cilantro. It was so good. I'm so glad that I went with the soup. Someone else in my party, who was there with me, she got the Caesar salad, So I got to try the Caesar salad and the tomato soup, so it all worked out.

Michele:

Excellent. Yes. Okay. So I have a very quick sidebar for you then. Yeah. So have you ever gotten the cobb salad at the Brown Derby at Hollywood Studios in Florida?

Katelyn:

I have. And I will say, Michele, I was going to text you after your episode when you talked about the Brown Derby, and that hurt my heart a little bit. Oh, no. Because I love like, I go to the Brown Derby, I think, every single time that I go to Disney. Really?

Michele:

Yeah. So it's just me.

Katelyn:

The Cobb salad is my favorite. I only get the Cobb salad, and I can't believe they charged you for bread because they always gave us bread.

Michele:

Okay. So okay. We'll have to come back to that because we're gonna have you back on another episode of most overrated and underrated attractions. There's there's gonna be a group of us. So we'll go back to Brown Derby, but not to I just had to ask because you said you were a salad girl. Okay. So we're back we're back at Disneyland and Club 3. Everyone take a deep breath and and put your mental energy back on the on the feet selfie photo.

Michele:

Like, that's where I'm living right now.

Katelyn:

For my entree, I had the prime New York strip with potato gnocchi, spring onion sous vide, and then for dessert, I am not a carrot cake person. My husband loves carrot cake. So for him, I got the spring carrot cake creme brulee with pineapple chouille and walnut brittle. And

Michele:

Wow.

Katelyn:

It was out of this world. Every everything.

Michele:

What were your other choices?

Katelyn:

There was a a lemon cake.

Michele:

Okay.

Katelyn:

That was that was the other one that I was between because it was it was labeled Lillian's lemon sponge cake. Yeah. Mhmm. So I almost got that. But then, again, the cast member, he just said the the creme brulee the carrot cake creme brulee is so good.

Michele:

That sounds good.

Katelyn:

Like a a raspberry sorbet and then some sort of chocolate.

Michele:

I was like, there had to be a chocolate. Yeah.

Katelyn:

Yeah. And so, Michele, like you mentioned, obviously, there's, like, the club fee, but then there's you also have to pay for your food, and you have to pay for your alcohol. And so that 4 course meal is a $130.

Michele:

That's not that bad for Disney dining prices.

Katelyn:

So correct. I also have done the the queen, queen Victoria's table at Victoria and Albert's.

Michele:

Yeah.

Katelyn:

And that is over triple the price. And this meal was by far like, I would pick this meal every day over

Michele:

Victoria and Alberts? Yeah. I loved Victoria and Alberts, and I want again, we're getting sidetracked. I wanna go again. But Yeah. My meal at Takumite, it was Yeah. Phenomenal. It was an incredible experience. I'm so glad I did it.

Michele:

I'm doing a whole pod on it next month. And it was 225, so not that much more. It was a 7 course meal, but I would not ever do that again. Whereas, I feel like at Club 33, I would want to do that, like, monthly.

Katelyn:

Yeah. Now you could get a wine pairing with it. That was 225. I did not do the wine pairing. Like, I will always do a wine pairing, but since I was there for work, I did not do the wine pairing. They do a specialty cocktails at Club 33.

Michele:

I I would have to do one of those.

Katelyn:

When the club opened, Club 33 used to be the only place in Disneyland Park that you could get alcohol

Michele:

to consume alcohol.

Katelyn:

But now they have, Oga's Cantina, so it's no longer the only place to get alcohol. But for a while, it was. I had the throwers and maskers cocktail, which is their take on a hurricane. I figured I'm in New Orleans Square. I needed to have a hurricane.

Michele:

I love their names for everything.

Katelyn:

It was really good. They also had a special 100 year cocktail for the 100 year celebration and that was called Ever Skyward. It was a gin drink. I almost ordered it, and then I saw the price. It was a $100 for one cocktail. Woah. Okay. Again, I wasn't putting the bell icon.

Michele:

The picture of it. I don't even drink gin. So I'm like, I just need it for the Instagram.

Katelyn:

I have a photo of it. Don't be rude.

Michele:

There we go. My girl.

Katelyn:

The last thing, I got the latte that has the 33 logo, you know, like, stenciled on it because I had to. Yeah. And that was really good. But, overall, I mean, the food was excellent. The service, you can't get any better. I mean, these are other than me, the the the little girl who dreamed of going to Club 33, nobody important. But, like, everybody else, you know, if you're a member there, they're they're catering to the top of the top, so the 1%, the executives, that kind of thing. But my name is now in the club 33 guest book.

Katelyn:

I did get to sign it.

Michele:

That is amazing. So how long did you spend there? I mean, from pushing the doorbell to merchandise wrap up to the like, how long did you spend? And was that the only thing you did that day?

Katelyn:

So our lunch was at 11:30. We so we got there right at 11:30. We left the club around, like, 1 30, 1 45, so 2, 2 and a half hours. And that was not the only thing we did. We spent the rest of the day in Disneyland. We actually had a park hopper, so we spent some of the time in Disneyland, then we went back, then we went over to California Adventure, then we came back to Disneyland, and we closed down the park. They were open until, midnight that night, and we were on Pirates at 11:55, and that was our last ride.

Michele:

So when you rode Pirates, were you able to see anybody? I mean, do you now know where to look?

Katelyn:

Yeah. So since you're above the queue, you can't really see any any of the club or the balcony when you're, when you're on the ride. But when you're walking by, you can see the people standing up there. And, you know, we saw people sitting out on the balcony and our group, we were like, oh, we were there. That was us. Like, we we were looking out on, you know, on everybody else. But, you know, the last story that that, you know, I'll share. And then, Michele, if you have any, like, any other questions, I'm happy to keep talking about Club 33.

Katelyn:

But the cast member that was working with us, he said that Michael Jackson, at one time, was invited to Club 33, and he came to the club, and he went out on the balcony, and he caused such chaos and a riot that guests were actually trying to climb the, like, the trestle and and climb the balcony to get to him because they didn't know, you know, what it was up there. And he had to be escorted out of the club, you know, down the elevator, out the park. And then they actually called him a few days later and said, you know, because of that, you're no longer welcome at the club. So Wow. Yeah.

Michele:

So I actually I have a Michael Jackson story from when he stayed at the Grand Floridian when I was a cast member. But I will save that for when I'm telling stories and not you.

Katelyn:

Yes.

Michele:

I just have one question that popped into my head as you were talking. So you had a park hopper. Yes. Park admissions do not come with the club. Correct? Like, that's separate.

Katelyn:

From what I understand, members do have an allotment of tickets Okay. That they can assign throughout the year. I don't know what that allotment is.

Michele:

Okay. So you were with a member, which is why you got to, like, go in and see the different bank debts. So when you went over to California Adventure, like, if that member had wanted to just drop in and have a cocktail, is that allowed? Or do you do you have to have reservations whenever you're going to go to a Club 33?

Katelyn:

So you need reservations for where we ate lunch, but I believe they can just drop in to, the Salon Niveau for cocktail. And then there's also over in California Adventure in the Carthay Circle,

Michele:

in the

Katelyn:

Carthay restaurant there, there is the 1901 Lounge, and that's Club 33. But that is strictly, I believe, strictly cocktails. I don't think they have a lunch menu or a dinner menu.

Michele:

Okay.

Katelyn:

At that point in the night, the member had already left, to catch their flight. So we were going to text them and say, hey. Do you think we will try to get into 1901? I was gonna say.

Michele:

So now your Disney bucket list is another plus 33, whereas mine is still in a plus 33 will do. I get it. Now you're like, you're sophisticated.

Katelyn:

Right. I didn't you know, since I was, you know, work, I didn't wanna push my luck especially because, you know, I'd love to be invited back.

Michele:

Yeah. Seriously, anybody out there who is listening to this who wants to play 6 Degrees of Separation to get us, you know, all into Club 33, like, let me know how I can help. I'm I'm there for you. Okay.

Katelyn:

And, Michele, just to circle back to our, Brown Derby conversation, that is where the Club 33 location in Hollywood Studios is.

Michele:

Yeah.

Katelyn:

So anybody listening that wants to go scope them all out. Hollywood Studios is next to the Brown Derby.

Michele:

Yeah. It is actually if you are in the parks and you are with someone who knows where they are, you can, like, see sometimes you can see the Club 33 kind of logo or whatever, like, on a window or something. And it's fun just to, like, get a picture and be like, I know you're up there. Okay. And this was so fun. I am just going to I can't wait to see all your pictures.
